Typing Tutor to Customize the Perfect Typing Training Session
In the past, if you were able to type fast, people would just look at you funny and think of you as someone who spends way too much time in front of a computer. However, things have changed, and now, if you are able to type at speeds of over 80 words per minute, without looking at the keyboard, you will see that people look at you with envy or admiration.
Most people now truly understand the level of determination and the amount of work needed to reach that level of typing, and are trying their best to reach such a high level too.
Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing brings a truly unique option to the table: customizable training. Unlike previously reviewed software, Mavis Beacon allows users to create a customized training plan that focuses on the areas where they need the most help.
Besides this, options present in Typesy 2017 Typing Tutor or Typing Instructor are also present here. Things such as goal setting, adaptive learning, and games, make an appearance here as well.
Unfortunately, a problem that plagues Typing Instructor also plagues Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing: there are no video trainings, and it is a real shame, as it has been shown that there is no better way to teach a person something than by actually showing them how to do it. Keep this in mind when looking for software, because this is not usually something that is added later via an update.
Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing: Main Features
- Advanced progress reporting and tracking
- Mac and Windows compatible
- Customizable training sessions
- Adaptive training programs
|★★★★★★★★☆☆||Comprehensive software with great customization options.|
Typing Goals and Progress
Just like previously reviewed software, Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing Platinum comes with goals that can be set by you, and constantly monitors your progress. The more advanced your skills become, the more difficult the exercises will be, so you will never feel like you’re getting bored or that you’re too good for the software. 10 out of 10 for goal monitoring, as there is nothing more than a regular user could want in this category.
Progress reporting is done automatically whenever you work on an exercise. However, if you just want to practice without affecting your progress, you can turn off the progress tracker in the options menu. This typing tutor is not as lenient as other programs, and it does not allow you to progress to more advanced lessons if you do not get good marks in speed or accuracy at the test you are currently doing. 10 out of 10 for progress reporting.
Accessibility is another area in which Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing gets good marks, but it would have gotten a perfect score if it offered video training as well. Even without video training, it does offer a large selection of games that help improve typing, so this is easily accessible to children as well. It also allows for special customization options, such as the one mentioned above, for stopping the tracking, or the option of playing your own music while training.
Unfortunately, audio instructions are missing as well, and this is certainly something that can’t be overlooked by some users. Learning by watching someone do what you’re trying to learn, and listening to advice at the same time, is much easier than reading how to do something and then trying to do it yourself. Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing gets 8 out of 10 for accessibility, as the lack of video and audio training keep it from getting a perfect score.
The only extra that Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing Platinum provides, is the customizable training plan. However, that is a very important extra, as it allows any user to tailor the program to specific needs. Weak points can easily be addressed this way, as users can add the exact exercises they want to work on, to a specific training program, and then start working on that without fear of getting sidetracked with other exercises.
Even though this is the only extra provided by the software, it is an excellent one that is not being offered in other popular typing software, so a perfect 10 out 10 for this.
No hardware compatibility issues have been reported so far with Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing Tutor, but this does not mean that they do not exist. It is compatible with PCs and Macs as well, so whatever you have at home is perfect for this software. 10 out of 10 for hardware at the time of this writing, but this may change in the future.
Support seems to be a weak point when it comes to Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing, as there is no technical support via phone being offered by the producing company. However, advanced users on forums are usually able to answer any question that is not answered in the FAQ, even though contacting the producing via email would work as well. 7 out of 10 for support, because telephone support is the best for of support, and the one that offers the fastest results.
C. Giguere has this to say: “I thought it was a fairly good product. It was easy and fun to use.”
A. Stein has this to say: “I recommend it as long as you’re willing to take your own responsibility in the ‘thinking’ part.”
Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing Review: The Verdict
45 points out of 50 may seem like a lot for software that doesn’t offer any video or audio training, but keep in mind that Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing does offer the interesting and unique option of customizing a training program to suit your needs! This makes it perfect for those with problems in specific areas, looking to improve one area at a time. Just keep in mind that support for this product is not extremely fast, and it does not come via telephone, so if you think support will be needed constantly, it is probably best to look at other options.
If you don’t think you’ll be needing support, and if you’re looking forward to seeing your colleagues at working staring at your fingers as you type at blazing speeds, then it’s time to get to work. Start practicing often and hard, and you will not be disappointed with the results
